Back Splash

Using a backsplash on a countertop is recommended to protect the surrounding wall and to give the countertop a finished look. In most cases, when countertops are installed there is a gap between the back of the countertop and the back wall. To give your countertop a finished look, you will want to install a backsplash, tile the wall, install molding or apply caulking to the gap.

If you decide to have a backsplash installed, you will need to choose a height. The most common height for backsplashes is 3 inches to 4 inches.
Some customers choose 4½ inches to cover a paint line or 6 inches if a higher backsplash is preferred. Typically, backsplash material is taken from the same stone as the countertop but is cut down to ¾ inch in thickness. Backsplash pieces are usually cut in 80 inch pieces. If necessary the length can be shortened to accommodate variations in the wall. Backsplash pieces sit on top of the countertop with a seam providing the link between the two surfaces. The backsplash is also glued to the wall.
